The Toughest Tom in Sand Creek By Rick Spoerl Since I missed the first day of the turkey opener, only because I was required to pay the mortgage, I was anxious to arrive at turkey camp. It was 1:00am, yes AM and I was wide awake on our 5 hour drive. So was my seventeen year old son Sean as we talked turkey all the way up north. Sean had shot his first coyote a few weeks back and hoped he would see one on this trip. Of coarse some words of fatherly wisdom accompanied the discussion relating to girls and careers along with some talk of school as is customary on these long drives (he probably dreads that). Springtime Scouting By Rick Spoerl Although most springtime scouting excursions focus on shed hunting, you can gain all kinds of info about game in general. Getting up early in the morning reveals pheasant cackles, turkey gobbles, grouse drumings as well as the number of deer in the area. Depending on how early in the year it is will divulge the accuracy of the trip. For example, if you’re scouting a wetland or area that has a lot of water around in early April and you see lots of blue wing teal ducks, it may be that they’re just migrating through the area.
Left to Right are Ralph Spoerl, Tommy Spoerl, Bob Kalivoda, Rick Spoerl, and Al Spoerl.
The Big Spill By Rick Spoerl The Warden received the call from the dispatcher that a 911 call was just made out of the small Wisconsin Mississippi river town of Ferryville. The first 911 call since the service was recently installed there. The caller had said he was at the Ferryville boat landing and heard people calling for help out on the river. He said he was unable to see anyone floating in the water but said that because of high winds the waves were very big. The Morning After By Rick Spoerl After reading "The Big Spill" you probably noticed several thing’s we did or did not do to create what happened. Some good and some bad. Obviously putting on the life vests was critical and made survival possible. After leaving the boat and not calling the dog was in my opinion also critical as the dog could have tried to climb on us making swimming impossible. But their was also a lot of thing’s we could have done to change the events. "READ MORE"......
Peggy’s First Doves By Rick Spoerl The sun was halfway below the tree line and although this late summer day was a scorcher, the air had cooled considerably. This was a typical early September evening in southern Wisconsin. My young dog Peggy and I were sitting some twenty yards off a small pond near a tree line that the Doves roosted in regularly. Peggy had just turned a year old and had never hunted doves before. I thought this might be a great exercise in steadiness if the birds showed up. READ MORE......
Timberdoodle’s, Ducks & Pheasant’s By Rick Spoerl Woodcocks seem to be the topic in most woodcock combo articles, but woodcocks, ducks and pheasants? I don’t adorn the English vest, high top boots nor shoot game birds with an over and under. I don’t search out earthworm hangouts or follow migration patterns of the little chunky guys, but I do love to shoot them. I’ve never seen woodcocks while grouse hunting in Wisconsin. I have however seen them while hunting ducks and pheasants. The grouse I hunt are usually in drier ground than woodcocks prefer. "READ MORE".........
Our Gun’s By Rick Spoerl "Excuse me officer, me and my gang banger buddies here would like to surrender our handguns to you because of the recently passed hand gun ban". I don’t think so. You don’t have to be a brain surgeon to know that if a federal law outlawing hand guns is passed, murderers, rapists, robbers and any other hardened criminal would be the last to turn in their guns. In Britain and Australia every legitimate member of a licensed gun club had to hand in their guns. Gun crimes in those countries rose 103% from 1997-2002. Why? Criminals now know when entering a house, mugging someone, raping someone or robbing a business that because of the legislatures false hopes of controlling crime that there is a slim chance their victim will be able to protect themselves. This leaves us extremely venerable to attack. Not vulnerable because we don’t have guns, but more vulnerable because the criminal knows we aren’t armed. "READ MORE".......
How Much is that Doggy in the Window? By Rick Spoerl Does the old saying "you get what you pay for" mean anything in the dog world? Specifically in the field dog world? Most owners, trainers and handlers would agree that the saying does hold some water. Everyone wants the best possible candidate they can get and most field trailers and hunt testers would be willing to fork out a pretty penny for the right dog. But exactly what is the right dog.
