Back To Wisconsin for Black Bears
As I sat up in my tree on the opening day of
the Black Bear season in Wisconsin I thought about what someone
had said to me once. "Bait hunting for black bears is to easy, I
don’t have any desire to shoot a bear on a bait pile" he said.
Then I thought about the two previous years I spent Bear hunting
in Canada sitting over a bait pile enjoying the scenery for some
sixty plus hours. And came home skunked. "Maybe I just stink at
Bear hunting" I thought.

The Bear at POW Creek

Every animal is "hunt able", as long as time isn’t
a factor. But most of us only have a certain amount of time to get the job done.
I’m not making excuses only stating a fact. After all we do have to pay the
mortgage.
This springtime Canadian Bear bow hunt would be seven days
long with six full days of hunting. It would be a bait hunt and most would think
you would at least see a bear at the bait during this time. Well that’s simply
not always the case. Bear hunting whether with bait, dogs or stalking is
challenging and success rates average 30 percent or so. It’s by no means a gimme.

Extreme Bear Hunting
By Rick Spoerl
Five to six preference points or more (obtained one
per year) is what it takes to receive a Wisconsin bear hunting harvest
permit. I received my first Wisconsin kill tag in 1991 and harvested a
fairly average sized bear of 165 pounds. I shot him over bait with my
bow. After hunting over bait twice in Canada and spending some hundred
plus hours on stand without getting a shot at a big Bear, I was happy to
finally harvest my first Black Bear. It made a beautiful rug and had a
cool looking white V patch on his chest. After Ontario’s ridiculous
decision to ban spring bear hunting I decided to concentrate my bear
hunts to Wisconsin.

Barbecue Bear Bean’s
By Rick Spoerl
Ingredients-
2 lbs. Ground Bear Meat
1 large Can Barbecue Baked Beans
1 15 oz. Can Butter Beans (drained)
1 15 oz. Can Northern Beans (drained)
1 lb Mini Wieners or Mini Smoky Joes
2 Medium Onions
1 18 oz. Bottle of Your Favorite Barbecue Sauce
1 tsp. Tabasco Sauce
Brown the ground meat in a frying pan and drain. Dice Onion and add
meat, onion, and all other ingredients in crock pot, slow cooker or large
stove top pot. Cook on high for one hour than cook on low one additional
hour and serve.
This is somewhat a combination of different bean recipes I’ve put
together making an extremely tasty bean dish. 100% of the people that I
have made it for have loved it. And it’s easy. Just dump the ingredients
in a crock pot, cook and eat.
