ABOUT THEM

A very fast in flight bird like his cousin the Hooded Merganser reaching speeds up to 100mph. Their diet consists of 95% animal matter, like fish, amphibians, and other invertebrates. The Common Merganser has an occasional hoarse croak sound they make. They fly in single formations or irregular small flocks very close to the water. They also have a strong direct flight. They nest in tree cavities. nest boxes, cliff crevices, and on the ground. They prefer forested regions and mountainous terrain. The Hen lays 9-12 eggs. Wisconsin Common Mergansers most likely winter along the gulf Coast. Populations number over 1,000,000 and remain stable.

DESCRIPTION

The Drake has a dark green head, pinkish white neck, breast and sides, and a bright red long bill. The Hen has a reddish brown head with rough crest, a white throat patch and under parts, and bright red bill. Both have reddish orange feet.
