Haley and her 2010 Tom Back To the Chase for Wisconsin Long Beards Purrs and whines is what my strategy would be for some twenty minutes of seducing the big Tom that approached my daughter Haley and me in full strut. We were finally within what I call "hunting distance" to a big Tom. "READ MORE"
Scouting While Hunting By Rick Spoerl As the rain let up early in the morning we got a late start out to the blind. The last thing I wanted to do was walk out to the blind in the pouring rain. I figured the birds would be getting on the ground late. As the rain let up just before sunrise my 14 year old daughter Haley and I climbed into our blind at opening but Uncle Al who was hunting a couple miles down the road was walking across the field when the woods came alive. Hunting the Roost By Rick Spoerl My son Sean couldn’t get off of work during the week so he met us at camp late Friday afternoon. He missed the first two days but still made the five hour drive to northwestern Wisconsin for the weekend. My 14 year old daughter Haley, my Uncle and I all had our birds and when Sean arrived he was pretty pumped up. I told him that I heard some birds gobbling in the morning and took him to the area and told him to hunt the roost until close. He brought his girlfriend along who also was a turkey hunter but had a permit for a different zone and time but wanted to come with. "READ MORE"
Pushing Deer By Rick Spoerl As my Uncle Al, friend Gary and I started the leg burning heart pounding climb to the top of the ridge, we heard the loud crack of my eighteen year old son Sean’s 270 caliber rifle and we knew the "push" worked. He called us on the radio and said "I got a nice buck and there is the mother of all does standing near, should I shoot her too?" Before I could answer, "BANG". I guess he made up his own mind. The doe was huge, and Sean had two doe tags along with the buck tag. He had his work cut out for him as we had to keep going. Bridgette, Gary’s 14 year old granddaughter was also in hiding at the other side of the farm, waiting for a deer to move her way.
My Baby’s a Hunter By Rick Spoerl Although I’ve introduced lots of people to duck hunting including some youngsters like my two sons, nephews and some kids of my friends, I never get tired of watching them the first time they shoot a duck, deer or turkey. It’s comparable to them catching their first fish but much more intense. This year I was fortunate enough to introduce my twelve year old daughter Haley to hunting. We missed the spring turkey hunt because of fast pitch softball and basketball commitments so we made plans for the 2008 youth duck hunt as well as the youth deer hunt in October.
Springtime Scouting By Rick Spoerl Although most springtime scouting excursions focus on shed hunting, you can gain all kinds of info about game in general. Getting up early in the morning reveals pheasant cackles, turkey gobbles, grouse drumings as well as the number of deer in the area. Depending on how early in the year it is will divulge the accuracy of the trip. For example, if you’re scouting a wetland or area that has a lot of water around in early April and you see lots of blue wing teal ducks, it may be that they’re just migrating through the area. Our Gun’s By Rick Spoerl "Excuse me officer, me and my gang banger buddies here would like to surrender our handguns to you because of the recently passed hand gun ban". I don’t think so. You don’t have to be a brain surgeon to know that if a federal law outlawing hand guns is passed, murderers, rapists, robbers and any other hardened criminal would be the last to turn in their guns. In Britain and Australia every legitimate member of a licensed gun club had to hand in their guns. Gun crimes in those countries rose 103% from 1997-2002. Why? Criminals now know when entering a house, mugging someone, raping someone or robbing a business that because of the legislatures false hopes of controlling crime that there is a slim chance their victim will be able to protect themselves. This leaves us extremely venerable to attack. Not vulnerable because we don’t have guns, but more vulnerable because the criminal knows we aren’t armed. "READ MORE".......
