EASTERN TURKEY

(Meleagris gallopavo silvestris)

We talk about the Eastern first because its the most abundant, most hunted, and largest bird hunted. The largest turkey on record by the National Wild Turkey Federation is a 35.81 pound bird taken in Iowa by Kyle Nook. They are most found in areas of heavy mast producing trees, from New England and southern Canada to northern Florida west to Texas, Missouri, Iowa, and Minnesota. They were also successfully introduced to California, Oregon and Washington. They are very successful nesters and prolific enough to inhabit areas of conifers as well as suburban areas and grasslands with little forests. The Tom's or Gobblers as they are called normally are over 20 pounds, while the female or Hen is usually smaller weighing 8-13 pounds.
