IN WISCONSIN
GREENWING TEAL
(Anas crecca)

These little ducks breed as well as migrate threw Wisconsin. They migrate in much larger flocks than most Ducks. Their beautiful colors don't become present until late fall. The Hens high pitched Mallard like call is most often heard early in the year. The Drakes high pitched whistle can also be duplicated on call. They typically migrate throughout the fall but some Greenwings migrate very late in the year, unlike their cousin the Bluewing. They are 12"-16" inches long, they are the smallest Duck we see. They average .6 to .7 lbs. The 2001 North American population is estimated at 2.5 million, 39% above the long term average but 21% below last years estimate. They mostly inhabit marshes, ponds, lake edges, and mud flats. The Drake has a chestnut head with a bright green patch behind his eye, a vertical white stripe on his side and an underside of pale white and gray. The Hen is mottled gray and brown with a whitish belly. They both have green speculums on the wings, with outer stripes of black. They have a grayish bill as well as their feet. The Hen lays between 8-9 eggs.
