Largemouth Bass

(Micropterus salmoides)

The largemouth bass is one of Wisconsin's more common game fish and with the ever increasing popularity of tournaments in the state its also becoming one of the most sought after and popular. The fish loves shallow weedy lakes but is found in nearly all types of bodies of water. Unlike the southern fish which is the more dominant of its territory because of the lack of predator fish seeking it for food you will find you have to work a little harder in Wisconsin since its behind the northern, musky, and walleye as far as predators are concerned. The water temperature in Wisconsin is also much colder which makes for shorter growing seasons and smaller slower presentations to take fish. A 5 lb. fish in Wisconsin is very old while the same size fish in say Florida or Texas is very young. The bass can be caught on nearly every lure manufactured but the kings of popularity include the plastic worm, spinner baits, crank baits, and jigs. Live bait also works well with anything from minnows to nightcrawlers catching fish.
