SCOTERS

ABOUT THEM
Their are three different Scoters, the White Winged Scoter, the Surf Scoter, and the Black Scoter. The White Winged is the largest of the Scoters. Scoters are Diving Sea Ducks wintering on both the coasts. They range along the Atlantic and Pacific coasts as well as inland Canada and the Great Lakes. They fly in loose flocks stringing into irregular wavy lines. Their flight is swift and strong, direct and close to the water. The Hens lay 5-9 eggs. They feed on mollusks, crustaceans, aquatic insects, plants and fish. The Black Scoter is among the most vocal. The Black Scoter was also the only painting accepted in 2001 for the Federal Duck Stamp contest because it had yet been on a Federal Stamp.
DESCRIPTION
All three are black with different colored bills of white, yellow, and variations being multicolored.
