The characteristics that separate the smallmouth from the large mouth include its red eye as well as the mouth which doesn't extend past its eye. One of the smallmouths favorite foods is the crayfish. They are one of the toughest fighters per pound when hooked. Their are smallmouth bass all over the state but the best smallmouth fishing tends to be in the northern portion of the state. In Wisconsin they typically spawn in May and June with some of the best fishing during this time. They average 1-2 pounds with a Wisconsin record over 9 lbs. The live baits to use for these fish include hellgrammites, minnows, worms, and leeches but artificial lures like spinner baits, rattling lures, and crank baits also catch smallmouth. |
